New Normal, New Smile!

July 9th, 2021

At Hickman Orthodontics we’ve noticed a trend over the past year: more and more people are looking to straighten their teeth with orthodontics. Adults have always been interested in having a great smile but we think there’s a reason for this sharp increase in requests: they are looking to the future and ready to navigate the new normal with a new smile. As we  return to our pre-covid (mask-less) routines again, many are seeking a Zoom-ready smile while they work from home while others who are heading back to the office are seeking that new and beautiful smile that they’ve always wanted for their grand return!

It’s not just any orthodontic treatment they’re after - Invisalign is the most highly sought. Invisalign Clear Aligners are the way to go for adult orthodontic treatment. Not only do they take less time than traditional braces, but they’re virtually invisible! Plus, we can treat only the elements of your smile that are most important to you.

Get that new smile!

Here’s how it works: we start with a 3D scan of your teeth and then Dr. Todd Hickman uses our 3D imaging technology to map out a unique treatment plan and create custom aligners to guide your teeth along their journey. It will be important that you wear your aligners 22 hours per day - and since we’re all home more often these days, good hygiene will be easier to attain.

We know there are a lot of direct to consumer options out there - here’s why we think it’s important to seek orthodontic care at a local practice: Orthodontists MOVE BONES IN YOUR FACE. Your teeth are bones! Without proper x-rays (we do 3D ones!) you could cause serious damage to your jaw, bite and smile. A local orthodontist, like Dr. Todd  has spent years studying in dental school and then additional years of education to gain an Orthodontic specialty degree. Dr. Hickman is board-certified by the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) and is trusted by thousands of families in our community.

Ready for a NEW smile?

If you’ve been staring at your smile wishing it was straighter, don’t waste another minute. Contact us today for a complimentary consultation - yes, free! We can’t wait to meet you and help you achieve the smile of your dreams. Everything You Need to Know about Invisalign First

March 10th, 2021

Invisalign® First brings all of the great benefits of Invisalign® clear aligners to kids aged 6 to 10. In the hands of a skilled orthodontist, Invisalign® First can be the cornerstone of your little one’s early orthodontic treatment plan. In this article, we give you the rundown on everything you need to know about Phase 1 treatment, the benefits of Invisalign® and how Invisalign® First is an option specially designed for growing children.

Phase 1 and the 7 and up Club

While most people associate preteens and teens with braces, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends having your child seen by an experienced orthodontist around their 7th birthday. At this age an Orthodontist can identify any orthodontic problems and get ahead of moderate and severe issues that can become a bigger problem down the line. This is referred to as Phase 1 treatment or early interceptive treatment and is performed before all of a child’s permanent teeth have erupted. Phase 1 Treatment commonly addresses:

  • Regulating arch width for developing teeth
  • Overcrowding
  • Protruding teeth
  • Crossbites
  • Airway Obstruction

How Does Invisalign® First Differ from regular Invisalign®

Invisalign® First utilizes the same advanced technology as regular Invisalign® so you can count on the same high level quality people have come to expect from this top clear aligner brand. At the same time, Invisalign® First clear aligners expand on key innovations and have been specifically designed for growing patients.  The Invisalign® First aligners were created exclusively for younger patients with shorter tooth crowns and what the company calls its Eruption Compensation feature that makes it possible to treat erupting or changing dentition. This means that Invisalign® First can accommodate baby teeth falling out and new teeth coming in.

The Clear Advantage

Many adults are familiar with the advantages of Invisalign® Clear aligners but it’s important to remember that your little one can enjoy many of these great perks too! Here are some of our top reasons our patients love Invisalign®:

  • Virtually Invisible® (great for even the most bashful kids)
  • Easy to remove: makes eating, brushing and flossing easy!
  • Comfortable Design:  no rubbing from brackets or poking from wires

Invisalign & DM - The Perfect Pair for Orthodontics During Social Distancing

December 9th, 2020

We live in strange times - gestures once taken for granted - handshakes, hugs, fist bumps - are now taboo; even our smiles are often hidden behind masks. But that doesn’t mean no one is seeing your smile. COVID-19 has meant socially distancing ourselves but it has also meant a boom in social media. Humans are social creatures and we’ve found new and creative ways to connect even while apart.

More selfies, virtual school, virtual meetings, and video chats are happening than ever before, which means we are even more up close and personal with our smiles. We all want to feel confident on screen - teens and adults alike. Self confidence is a huge factor in teen development and Invisalign has been found to increase teen confidence both during treatment and once they’ve achieved the smile they always wanted.

There is no reason to wait on getting the smile of your dreams for you or your child; and at Hickman Orthodontics, we have combined the technology of Invisalign and Dental Monitoring, to make sure you are as safe as possible while achieving that smile.

Why is Invisalign a great choice right now?

While we are all allowed out and about again, fears are still running high. We still need to be careful about what we touch, where we spend our time, and with whom. Invisalign allows for a more socially distanced approach to orthodontics, while still making sure you get the expertise of a trained and specialized orthodontist like Dr. Hickman. To get started, we use a 3D scanner to take images of your teeth and bone structure in order to map out a customized treatment plan and to build custom aligners that will help straighten your smile - invisibly. That means less time in your (or your child’s) mouth to get started.

Once your treatment plan is put in place, you will receive clear aligners to wear 22 hours a day - no skimping or treatment will take longer! We will want to see you for appointments, just like with braces, but with Invisalign we can space those appointments further out! And, with our special Dental Monitoring technology, we can even schedule virtual appointments via your SmartPhone! If we don’t see anything unexpected, we will give you instructions to move forward - no need to come into the office. Socially distant - check!

In order to further minimize your time at our practice - gosh we miss seeing our patients all the time but we know it's safer - we have implemented curbside pick up for aligners. During your treatment, you will receive a few batches of clear Invisalign aligners at a time. We then gauge your progress at appointments (in person or virtual) and move to the next set - if all is going well, you can just pick them up curbside!

While we’d rather see each and every one of our patients all the time, we are doing our part to flatten the curve and keep everyone healthy and safe. Invisalign, paired with virtual appointments on your smartphone via Dental Monitoring, allows us to help you attain the smile of your dreams in the safest way possible - it’s the clear choice. Not just any practice can do this, at Hickman Orthodontics we have the expertise with both orthodontics and technology to help you get that smile. Our fun and friendly office may look a bit different than it used to, but we’re still cooking up ways to make you feel the love while you’re here!

There is so much that we’re depriving ourselves of these days, don’t let the smile of your dreams be one of those things. We have flexible financing and low down payments.

Call us today at (317) 888-7807 to schedule a free consultation - we can start virtually or in person - your choice!

Invisalign - The Invisibility Cloak of Orthodontics

September 8th, 2020

In the current climate of COVID-19 we all wish we could step into a fantasy world and to tell the truth, apparating into Hogwarts sounds pretty good right now (ok, ok, Hermione, we know we can’t apparate in)! While we can’t really escape the reality of the times - reading Harry Potter is a good way to distract ourselves; and as we were doing so recently, we realized all the ways that the advances of  Invisalign Technology are like the advances in the wizarding world!

Just as Harry doesn’t know that the wizarding world exists at the beginning of the books, many patients come to us not knowing about Invisalign. So, just as Hagrid gives Harry a crash course, we’re going to do the same for you! Follow us to Diagon Alley, Hogwarts and beyond…

What is Invisalign? - The Invisibility Cloak of Orthodontics

Rather than using metal brackets and wires, at Hickman Orthodontics we can offer clear aligners that can gently and effectively move your teeth towards the smile of your dreams! Just like Harry’s invisibility cloak, Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible - these aligners are produced from a  patented flexible plastic material that was invented exclusively for Invisalign by biomechanical engineers who probably work in the Department of Mysteries. This stuff is that complex.

Transfiguration 101

Professor McGonagall would tell you that you need to understand the object you’re starting with before transforming it into something else. With Invisalign, Dr. Todd Hickman will use our high tech 3D scanning system to understand exactly where the bones in your mouth are at this point so that he can map out a plan for your finished smile and build custom fitted aligners for your journey. Our handheld scanner takes high resolution interactive images of your teeth in 3D at a rate of 6,000 images per second. Even Mr. Ollivander would be impressed with this wand!

Divination with Professors Trelawney and Firenze

While only a few have the inner eye, with lots of study (4 years of dental school and an additional 2 years of orthodontic study) a trained orthodontist can map out a customized treatment plan to ensure you have the smile of your dreams at the end of your orthodontic journey. With many years of experience and hundreds of cases treated with Invisalign, you can be sure you’re in competent hands with Dr. Todd. Know who your orthodontist is before you start treatment - you don’t want someone playing card tricks, a true seer is necessary.

Bubble Head Charms

Sorry, we’ve got to talk about the pandemic again...Wouldn’t it be great if we all could just walk around with a bubble head charm? Well that certainly seems more comfortable than all the PPE we’re wearing these days, but we’re not complaining! At Hickman Orthodontics we have taken every precaution to ensure your safety and the safety of our team. From changing our patient workflow to enhanced PPE, Madam Pomfrey would be proud.

When to start? Welcome to Hogwarts!

Harry receives his Hogwarts acceptance letter on his 11th birthday but we accept orthodontic patients of all ages: adults, teens, even kids as young as 7! So, are you a candidate for orthodontic treatment? Contact us today to find out!

We offer complimentary consultations both in-person and virtually. So pick up your broomstick and fly over or use some floo powder to speak with us virtually through the fire... er computer. We can’t wait to meet you!

Limited Treatment; Minor Fixes, Major Benefits

June 8th, 2020

Many adults had braces in the past and lost the straight smile they once had. Many other adults have simply never been happy with their smile. Maybe you’ve never considered orthodontics as an adult because you can’t imagine wearing metal braces to client meetings; maybe it’s because it’s a big time and financial commitment to undergo years of braces as an adult.

Whichever boat you fall into, we have good news! My team and I don’t want any roadblocks in the way of you having a beautiful smile… or having it back again.

That’s why we’re offering a Limited Treatment option to the adults of our community where my team and I will address only the elements of your smile that are most important to you. That means shorter treatment times and reduced fees.

Our practice, Hickman Orthodontics, is an Invisalign provider with tons of experience...which means that your treatment will be virtually undetectable.

People won’t notice you’re wearing them

Invisalign uses a series of clear aligners to straighten teeth. And, unlike traditional braces that you might have had as a kid, Invisalign aligners are removable. You take them out briefly when you eat or brush your teeth - that means no food caught between brackets; no flashbacks to the middle school cafeteria for you. Most of the time your aligners will stay in so they can do the work of moving your teeth. The good thing is that they are virtually invisible so people won’t even notice you’re wearing them.

Sometimes the most minor fix is just what you need

While we do offer full orthodontic treatment for adults at our practice, we find that many just don’t want to make that commitment. Whether it’s financial or time restraints, Limited Treatment is a great option.

Together we will figure out which elements of your smile are most important to you. We’ll agree on a course of treatment to fix only those areas, and we’ll set an estimated timeline. Because of the limited nature of the adjustments we are able to improve your smile in a much shorter timeframe than for those looking for full orthodontic treatment.

You’re not alone

Adults are getting braces more than ever before. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) says that adults are getting orthodontic treatment in record numbers, and not all of them for the first time either. Not only that, patients are reporting that after treatment they feel better about themselves and their social lives. Most would recommend seeking out treatment for other adults. Major benefits!

See an Expert

There are many services out there claiming they can mail you aligners and fix your teeth. We strongly believe that even the smallest changes to your mouth should be done under the in-person care of a trained and certified orthodontist, and the AAO agrees. Dr. Todd Hickman has extensive schooling in both dentistry and orthodontics (obtaining a degree for Doctor of Dental Surgery with high distinction in 1996, as well as his Certificate of Orthodontics in 1998) as well as specific training in treatment with Invisalign.

Make sure you know who it is that is making changes in your mouth. What looks like a small fix could domino into major issues without a trained orthodontist looking at the full picture.

At Hickman Orthodontics we have treated hundreds of teens and adults with Invisalign. We know what we’re doing and we’ve treated cases that are both difficult (Full Treatment) and simpler (Limited Treatment). Our team strives for clinical excellence in a friendly and welcoming environment. We appreciate that you have a busy schedule and will make sure to have you in and out as quickly as possible - time is important to us! …. It’s one of the reasons why we offer Limited Treatment.

It gets even better. With our special Dental Monitoring technology, we can even schedule virtual appointments via your SmartPhone! If we don’t see anything unexpected, we will give you instructions to move forward - no need to come into the office. That means fewer in-person visits, more efficiency, and texts from me with feedback on your progress. Socially distant - check!

Sounds like this is for you?

We are welcoming new patients and you can get started with just $250 down and $149/month for 20 months. Click below to schedule a complimentary consultation at our Indianapolis office or get started from the comfort of your home with our new virtual consultations

Hickman Orthodontics Welcoming Back Patients

April 29th, 2020

Dear Patients of Hickman Orthodontics,

We are happy to welcome you back to the office starting 04.27.2020 as we reopen under the guidelines of the governor’s office. Hygiene and safety have always been a priority at our office and we will be taking additional measures to ensure the safety of our patients and staff during this time.

Here are a few of our current in office changes and guidelines:

  • Any patient experiencing flu-like symptoms or fever, feeling sick or that has been exposed to anyone suspected to have been exposed to COVID-19, please reschedule your appointment and please do not enter the office.
  • When coming in for an appointment, we ask that you wait at our door for one of our staff members to come check you in for your appointment. Parents/Guardians will be asked to fill out a questionnaire and sign a consent form then return to their car. We will take your temperature and have you wash your hands before bringing you directly to the treatment area.
  • For new patients under 18, one parent may accompany the patient into the office.
  • Our tooth brushing stations are closed for now. Please brush your teeth thoroughly before coming to your appointment.
  • For additional safety, we have installed an RGF Air Purification System. The REME HALO is proactive and sends ionized aggressive advanced oxidizers into the room to destroy pollutants at the source, in the air and on surfaces, before they can reach our patients and staff.

Finally, for your convenience and safety, we will continue to offer virtual appointments for exams, observations appointments and retainer checks.

Our staff and patients are our family, and we are doing everything we can to keep our family safe. We thank you for your understanding and patience and look forward to seeing you again very soon!

The Top Reasons Why You Should Only Seek Invisalign Treatment with an Orthodontist - By Dr. Todd Hickman

February 25th, 2020

It seems that there are many options for straightening teeth these days and there’s no question that Invisalign is a front-runner. You can enjoy virtually invisible teeth-straightening while continuing to eat the foods you enjoy, brush and floss your teeth normally for better oral health and minimize office visits. The choice is clear!

However, you might wonder why it’s necessary to see an orthodontist for your Invisalign treatment. Here are the top reasons why only an orthodontist should treat you or your teen:

You only want to do this once. Do it right.

Everyone knows an orthodontist’s goals are straight teeth and a healthy bite. We ensure that the teeth, upper and lower jaws, gums and facial muscles are positioned so that you can bite, chew and speak well. Without taking these components into consideration, problems can arise, such as issues with the jaw joint (TMJ), headaches, excessive wearing or chipping of the teeth, premature tooth loss and gum problems.

Orthodontists identify the cause of the problem, and then solve it.

You may see crooked or gapped teeth. We see the cause of the problem. Orthodontists use their education, experience and expertise to delve deep to discover the root of the issue and solve it in a way that is healthy and sustainable-- for an attractive smile and a lasting result.

Orthodontics goes beyond your teeth.

Orthodontists study facial esthetics and understand how tooth movement can change your facial profile, smile line and general appearance. We understand how it relates to the face and future growth changes and take a holistic, comprehensive approach to your treatment so that your overall appearance is considered along with your smile.

Orthodontists are specialists.

After our dental school education, orthodontists devote an additional 2-3 years to the study of only orthodontics. We practice orthodontics exclusively. We focus our continuing education on orthodontics and see hundreds of patients per month. We are uniquely positioned to use our knowledge and skills to help you get the best possible result.
